Coach Robert Chen Headshot

Robert Chen
Director of the American Asian Cultural Center of Tribeca (AACCT)

Robert Chen was working as a professional photographer and videographer prior to his involvement with the New York American Asian community and was an avid table tennis player in his late 20's.

In 2004, Robert Chen founded the American Asian Cultural Center of Tribeca (AACCT) located at 384 Broadway, south of Canal Street in Tribeca, just west of Chinatown, to serve the Chinese American community in the greater New York Area and their friends.

The Center featured 10 table tennis tables, provided tournaments, table tennis lessons, Ballroom dancing, Kung Fu, English, Film classes and Summer Camps for Kids.

In 2005, Robert traveled to Guangzhou Ersha Tao in China, where Table Tennis Olympic and World Champion Ma Long was training. The purpose of his trip was to improve his personal and teaching table tennis skills, and to pass them on to the community in New York City.

In 2009, Robert returned to China for more training and coaching. While he was visiting, he played on the first seeded team in his age group at the Tianjin national tournament (CCTA) and placed third out of 500 players.

From 2007 to 2012, Robert was the Head Coach of the New York University Men’s and Women’s table tennis teams. In 2012, both teams were one of the top three college teams in New York City and New York State and they qualified for the National Collegiate Table Tennis Association (NCTTA) tournament.

Due to an outrageous rent increase in 2012, AACCT moved and downsized from its Tribeca location to 55 Chrystie Street near the Manhattan Bridge in Chinatown.

During the summer of 2016, AACCT opened a new 9,000 sq feet center in downtown Flushing, Queens and subsequently in February 2017 the Manhattan location was closed.  The Flushing location has 12 Table Tennis tables and meeting rooms. We provide for the community a 6 weeks children’s summer camp, teaching film, table tennis and academics.
